Salesian Studies

Jesus is risen! Alleluia!  Alleluia!  Please God your heart is rejoicing that Jesus has risen from the dead.  Someday we too will rise from death to eternal life with Him.  Meanwhile we want to become more fully human, more fully alive.  According to Fr. De Lillio, that means we must be willing to take chances - especially that of following our Lord  He says,

Taking a Chance

"Wishing more out of life won't cut it unless we take chances."  I sat and stared at this bumper sticker while waiting for the red light to change.  Its meaning is true, but chancy.  Change offers few guarantees, unless we are convinced the reward is worth the risk.  Even sound advice goes unheeded unless we can see that the "trade-off" of change is better than what we already enjoy.  Yes, the unknown is very scary.

Easter is about taking a chance too! Jesus' Resurrection asks us to take His life and death seriously.  To do that we have to risk all we have right now to follow Jesus.  While a big risk, the "trade-off" is certainly worth it.  It's a wonderful risk which has a real guarantee of coming true.

Francis de Sales encourages us to take our chances with Jesus.  In his book on The Love of God he maintains that this is what God desires.  "We must intend our salvation in the way God intends it.  God desires we be saved, we then need to desire what God desires."  (Treatise, VIII,4)  Salvation is a risk worth taking.

During this Easter Season, our Easter hope is that our "trade-off" for a better tomorrow is the choice of following the Risen Lord today!
